Accommodation

We have done some research into places to stay in and around Winchester. The reception is at Avington Park which is a 15 minute drive from the centre of the city on the eastern side. The following have rooms available for Friday 29 and Saturday 30 July.

The best value is probably the Holiday Inn, which is brand new and more tasteful than most, but is outside Winchester. It is the nearest hotel to the reception and we have negotiated a group rate there so if you mention the Sheils/Deeny wedding you can have bed and breakfast for £75 a night for a double including VAT or £65 room only. At the moment, they offer an even better advance purchase non refundable rate of £62 bed and breakfast or £52 room only. I recommend asking for a top floor room, from an outlook point of view.

Winchester has a cathedral, a Great Hall and a charming old centre. The top hotel there is the Hotel du Vin which has a Good Food Guide restaurant, but rooms run from £165 to £260.

The Mercure Wessex Hotel is an inelegant modern building, but has a great location opposite the cathedral and you can have a double room with a cathedral view for £107 to £133.

The Giffard House Hotel gets the best reviews on Tripadvisor and is a nice Victorian building, which is more of an upmarket B&B than an hotel in that it has no restaurant. Singles are just £71 and doubles are £91 to £128.
