Coonrod seeks to fill Scott Co. Circuit court vacancy

A candidate has emerged seeking to fill a vacancy left by the death of Circuit Judge Lois Bell.John D. Coonrod formally announced his candidacy Tuesday for the position of resident circuit court judge for the Seventh Judicial Circuit at Scott County. Coonrod is seeking election as a Democrat. he is a life-long resident of Winchester, maintaining an active law practice in the area for the past 30 years. in addition to engaging in private practice, he has served for the past 10 years as city attorney for Winchester, corporate counsel for the Scott County Housing Authority and as Scott County public defender.Following his graduation from Winchester High School, he attended Illinois College and Western Illinois University, receiving a degree in political science and public administration. he served with the secretary of state’s office as an administrative assistant to the director of driver’s services. Coonrod then attended the University of Mississippi School of Law and qualifying to practice law in state and federal courts in Illinois and Mississippi.he is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association, a director of the Scott County Economic Development Corporation and a trustee of the Winchester Public Library Board. he is also a member of Winchester Kiwanis, having served as president and treasurer. he is a member of First Baptist Church in Winchester, where he has served as deacon and moderator.he is married to Sue (Ballard) Coonrod, owner and operator of the Scott County Abstract co. They are the parents of three children: John Paul, who is attending law school at Indiana University; Thomas, who is attending culinary school in St. Louis; and Lecie, who is employed by the state Department of Children and Family Services.
