The Numerous Kinds Of Rehab Services
Posted by thizzfacedisco on December 21, 2011
Getting help for addiction isn’t an immutable process. There are three main types of treatment when it comes to drug or alcohol rehabilitation used by inpatient drug rehab program. Generally, all three of these methods will be used in conjunction, but sometimes only one method might be needed. There may be more of an emphasis on one over the other two as the primary form of treatment, or there may be an even balance of all three. Depending what the needs of the dependent person are, the mixing of these services varies.
Medical Specialists
The first method of treatment is medical services. Inpatient drug rehab facilities usually employ a wide array of professionals, from medical doctors and nurses to psychiatrists and therapists. One of the biggest elements of this treatment is medically supervised withdrawal, more commonly known as medical detoxification. Withdrawing from a drug can actually be very dangerous, as it an cause seizures, hallucinations, or pain. That being said, coming off a drug is safest when it can be monitored by medical professionals who can eliminate withdrawal symptoms and help speed the process.
Dual Diagnoses
Just one part of these medical services is dual-diagnosing. Oftentimes, patients who come in with substance abuse problems are also victims of mental disorders. For example, depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder can often compound the effects of drugs and alcohol. Dual-diagnosing means getting help for both problems.
Counseling
Treatment facilities also employ counseling as a method of treatment. Counseling at a rehab facility involves a professional therapist who specializes in cases of addiction. Groups are generally small and intimate and are based on mutual support. Other victims share their stories and encourage others to share theirs. The therapist and the other group members swap advice and criticism, and tackle issues like family and gender problems. Sometimes meditation is used. These small group sessions are designed to be positive experiences to help people cope and continue to grow, as well as to show that addicts are never alone in their struggle. . With all the encouragement, advice, and support, those who are recovering from addiction can continue to move in the right direction.
12 Step Program
Education is the third treatment service. It is vitally important because a lot of the time, people do not even realize just what is happening in their bodies when they abuse drugs or alcohol. In addition, addiction education help people to understand what is causing their struggle and why they feel the need to use these substances is so important. Addiction is a disease, and through understanding it, dependent people gain the upper hand in thwarting its advances. Learning some of the warning signs can help people prevent relapse. In most instances, treatment facilities will use a 12-step program for education. A small group of people will work together in conjunction with doctors, psychiatrists, and therapists to learn what is affecting them so they know how to keep themselves safe and independent down the road.
